New Next

New media has come a long way but it has had the most impact in the developed world.  The future of new media has to focus more on the developing and underdeveloped world.  If things keep going the way they currently are, there is going to be an even bigger gap between those who have the money and the resources to connect to the internet and those who don’t.  There are many communities outside the United States that do not have connection to the internet and in turn, they cannot connect to the rest of the world.  These communities are left behind economically, socially and even educationally.  Affordable and accessible smart phones have started to process of addressing this issue but in order to combat the digital divide, there needs to be affordable, accessible wireless internet access.

I believe that the future of new media is in wireless internet connection devices.  These devices will be strong enough to connect to distant internet wires.  These devices will be portable, rechargeable and wireless.  They can be used in schools, community centers.  More importantly, they will be very cheap to connect to.  The idea is to set up internet towers or wires in a central location, then pass out portable wireless connectivity devices to nearby communities in need.

  1. Hello Melody, I never thought of this. It is great that you are thinking outside the box and also considering what is always being looked over. In this case, it is the communities that cannot afford the advanced technology and the third world countries that don't have internet communication which causes them to be separated from the rest of the world as they are not involved in the current events. I think if a company was to tackle this niche, they would be successful as many people who are currently unable to receive the advanced technology can now be able to through the affordability that the company provides. I like how you said the new media is portable, rechargeable and wireless. Not only is it convenient where you can take it with you and recharge when necessary so you are not at a loss when your device dies but it is also wireless so you can connect wherever you go.

  2. Hi Melody, I love this idea. With a more centralized internet I also believe that struggling neighborhoods would rise out of poverty faster as well. Individual houses wouldn't have to pay for installation of internet and the centralized internet would also be able to be improve fast and more efficiently, in theory. Great idea and I really hope we so something like this in the near future.

  3. Hey Melody, I really like your idea to help target the communities who are left behind economically, socially and even educationally due to missing technologies. New medias such as the internet is vital for progression and would definitely help struggling neighborhoods be in a better place. Many would benefit from such an idea, and hopefully in the future there's something similar to this being implemented in these neighborhoods.

  4. Hi Melody, this is a very useful and helpful idea because not everyone has access to the internet, and some people who do, do not have a very good connection. The internet is vital now, as it is where people generally go to for news, entertainment, education, and much more.
